Copper Scrap Yard Serving NJ, DE, PA, and NY

Pile of copper pipeLooking for a convenient copper scrap yard? Sgt. Scrap is based in New Jersey and serves Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New York in addition to our home state. Copper is an essential component of countless products, including electronics, wires, and plumbing materials. But because copper is being used faster than it can be mined, scrap copper is in high demand.

Sources of Scrap Copper

You may not realize that the average home or business uses copper in many ways. The most common source of copper, of course, is electrical wires. However, there are lots of other everyday items that contain copper:

  • Electric motors
  • Alternators
  • Transformers
  • Washers and dryers
  • Water heaters
  • Air conditioners

Whether you’re cleaning out an old home or doing demolition at a commercial property, you’d be surprised at the amount of scrap copper you can find.

Note: Sgt. Scrap does not provide home or business cleanout services.

Grading System for Scrap Copper

When you’re gathering scrap copper, it’s important to know the quality. There are three categories of bare copper solids, indicating their quality:

Bare Bright

The highest grade of scrap copper, bare bright contains 99% pure copper.

Scrap copper #1

A grade of #1 indicates that the scrap is at least 98% copper.

Scrap copper #2

A grade of #2 indicates that the scrap is at least 94% copper.

Copper wires have a separate grading system. The several grades of copper wire are based on the yield of copper remaining after the insulation has been stripped off the wire:

High-grade #1 copper wire

is assigned a percentage based on the amount of copper that can be recovered.

Low-grade #2 copper wire

is found in things such as appliance cords and telephone wire. Most common wires are in this category and contain less copper to recover than high-grade wire.

When scrapping copper and other metals, we always recommend grouping scrap metal by grade. Keeping like with like can help maximize your profit. Sgt. Scrap also accepts some copper alloys, like brass and bronze.
