What Is Scrap Brass?

Brass is an alloy – a mix of two or more metals, usually copper and zinc. Brass also may contain traces of tin and lead. It’s a versatile metal that’s frequently used in home furnishings such as light fixtures and bed frames. You’ll often see brass described as red or yellow:
  • Red brass: This is the more valuable type of scrap brass. Its reddish tone, available to be seen more clearly after hitting with a grinder and being hit with direct light, comes from its high copper content. Red brass often is found in fixtures such as faucet valves, sprinkler heads, and water meters.
  • Yellow brass: This type of scrap brass has a slightly lower price due to its lower copper content. Easily distinguishable by hitting with a grinder and seeing a yellow sheen. Yellow brass is used in plumbing fixtures and auto parts, as well as musical instruments.

Other common sources of scrap brass include:
  • Doorknobs
  • Bullet casings
  • Air conditioning units

Types of Scrap Brass We Accept

To prepare your scrap metal for pickup or drop-off, make sure it’s as clean as possible. You’ll get a higher price for clean brass than you will for dirty brass. Remove any attached non-brass parts such as plastic, wood, or steel. Clean off paint, oil, or other contaminants. We’ll accept the following items:
  • Brass shells: These are a popular type of cartridge used in ammunition.
  • Water meters: This device, which measures the volume of water usage in a building, is often made of brass and steel, and may contain plastic.
  • Yellow brass 80/20: This is a material that is yellow brass but 20% of its weight comes from contaminates and 80% of the weight comes from yellow brass. These contaminates are steel, aluminum, plastics and anything that would take away from the weight of the yellow brass. Every piece is judged on case-by-case basis.
  • Yellow brass pipe: This type of metal pipe typically is mostly copper and zinc, with small amounts of iron and lead.
  • Clean red brass: Found in water pumps and other plumbing fixtures, red brass fetches a relatively good price due to its resistance to corrosion and ability to be recycled.
  • EDM wire: Used in manufacturing processes, electrical discharge machining (EDM) wire is made from brass.
  • 81 metal: Also known as semi-red brass or Meter brass, this scrap metal typically is found in water meters.
  • Dirty brass: Some scrap metal items, like faucets, are mostly steel with small amounts of brass. These “dirty” items have a lower value because they’re more difficult to recycle
